Born in Cuba, Mr. Guerra began his guitar studies in his hometown of Santa Clara with Domingo Carvajal. He studied at the Instituto de Arte Superior of Havana, graduating in 1982. He has won several international awards since 1974, when he won the “Amadeo Roldan” National Guitar Contest in Havana, and again in 1985. Most recently, in 2002 Rey was a nominee for the Latin Grammy Awards. He has performed in many of the most prestigious theaters in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, La Fenice Theater in Venice, Italy, National Auditorium in Mexico, Cecilia Meireles Concert Hall in Brazil, and the Maestranza Theater in Seville, Spain, among many others. He is considered the best interpreter of the guitar works of Leo Brouwer and has been recording since 1983.
