Born in Holguin, Cuba, soprano Eglise Gutiérrez, was named by Opera News as “one of opera’s next wave” (2012). Ms. Gutiérrez has performed in some of the most prestigious international venues, including Covent Garden (London), Teatro Colón (Buenos Aires), Teatro Dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro Verdi Trieste (Zurich), Maggio Musicale (Florence), Cagliari, Carnegie Hall, Savonlinna (Berlin), Bellas Artes (Mexico), La Monnaie (Brussels), Liceu de Barcelona, Teatro Real (Madrid), Opera Comique (Athens), Florida Grand Opera, Washington Concert Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Seattle Opera, as well as in Tel Aviv, Hamburg, Vancouver, and Montreal. She has participated in numerous prestigious opera festivals, such as the Santa Fe Opera Festival, Cincinnati Opera Festival, Festival Alfonso Ortiz de Tirado (Mexico), Wexford Festival, Sarasota Opera Festival, Caramoor Festival, and Ravinia Festival.
She made her debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in the 2009-2010 season as Linda di Chamonix, which was recorded and distributed by Opera Rara under the baton of Sir Mark Elder. She subsequently sung La fée in Massenet’s Cendrillon under the baton of Bertand de Billy with Joyce Didonato (available on DVD). In Puerto Rico she sang a concert duet with Larry Brownly. She made her Berlin Deutsche Oper Debut as Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor (with tenor Roberto Alagna). She made also her debuts at the Teatro Real in Madrid as Elvira in I Puritani, Dresden as Gilda in Rigoletto, followed by Rigoletto in Zurich, La Traviata in Seattle, Lucia di Lammermoor in Florida, I Puritani in Cagliari, and returned to Covent Garden as Amina in La Sonnambula under the baton of Daniel Oren.
In 2008-2009 Ms. Gutiérrez made her debut at Teatro Lirico di Cagliari as Amina in La Sonnambula (available on DVD), her Maggio Musicale Fiorentino debut as Lucia, and her Hamburg debut as Gilda. Also that season, she sang La Traviata in Miami, Lucia in Montreal, Rigoletto in Vancouver, I Puritani in Athens, her Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut as Gilda with James Conlon at the Ravinia Festival, and at the Savonlinna Opera Festival as Lucia where she was name “Artist of the Year” (2008).
Ms. Gutiérrez has appeared in concert in Prague, Cannes, Finland, Miami, and did a U.S. tour with international opera star, Andrea Bocelli. In 2008, she sang the title role of La Sonnambula at Carnegie Hall with the Opera Orchestra of New York under the baton of Eve Queller, made her Seattle Opera debut as Elvira in I Puritani, returned to Detroit as La Sonnambula (under the baton of Richard Bonynge), and made her debut at the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Mexico City) in Lucia di Lammermoor under the baton of Edoardo Müller.
A three-time recipient of the Gerda Lissner Foundation Grant and grant recipient of the Singers Development Foundation, Ms. Gutiérrez has collected top prizes, including First Prize at the International Mirjam Helin Competition (Helsinki, 2004), West Palm Beach Opera Competition, New Jersey State Opera Competition, and Connecticut Opera Competition. Ms. Gutiérrez’ long list of awards and honors also includes Winner of the Montserrat Caballé International Opera Competition, First Place in the Marian Anderson Opera Competition, Second Place in the Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation Opera Competition (2002), and First Place in the Giargirai Bel Canto Opera Competition.
Ms. Gutiérrez graduated from The Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Cuba (Suma Cum Laude) and from The Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. She made her Carnegie Hall début as soprano soloist in Mozart’s Requiem and John Rutter’s Requiem under the baton of John Rutter in May 2004, after completing her final year at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.
Additional roles in her repertoire include Hanna Glawari in The Merry Widow, and the title roles in Roig’s Cecilia Valdés and Vives’ Doña Francisquita with Pro Arte Gratelli.
Engagements in the 2012-2013 season included Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Teatro Liceu, Barcelona, 2014), Thaïs with the Florida Grand Opera, La Fée in Cendrillon at Barcelona’s Liceu, and Lucia di Lammermoor with the Opera de Marseilles. In 2015, she performed in the St. Hugh Concert Series with pianist Roberto Berrocal, performed the role of Norina in Don Pasquale at the Cincinnati Opera Festival, La Contessa D’Alma, Viva in The Marriage of Figaro at the Teatro Solis (Montevideo, Uruguay) and Gilda at Teatro Degollado in Mexico. In the 2016-2017 season, she performed in I Puritani at the Metropolitan Opera House and in the 2018-2019 season with Opera Lyrica of Chicago. Also in 2018, she performed selections from La Traviata in recitals with pianist Angel Rodriguez in Mexico and Guatemala. She has performed in multiple concerts with Maestro Marlene Urbay and the Florida Chamber Orchestra. Ms. Gutiérrez has been on the CEC voice faculty of since 2022.
